A Tribute to Harry Patch by Radiohead

Here in the UK we’ve all heard the news of the death of Harry Patch, who was the last surviving british veteran of World War 1.  It’s made a lot of people reflect and sadly a lot of people have taken no notice at all.

Now, I’m not going to go into a rant and tell people what they should think or feel about this, my concern is that with no one left to remind us of this terrible war, people are just going to be free to forget about it.

Anyway, whilst on Facebook this morning a post from the Radiohead Facebook Page appeared on my homepage with a link totheir new song “Harry Patch (In Memory Of)” and I just wanted to share it with you.

To download the song visit the Radiohead Website and the link is in an article posted on Wednesday 5th August 2009.

It will cost 1.00 GBP (£1) to download with the proceeds going to the British Legion.  I would encourage anyone to download this because, not only is it for a great cause with the lyrics containing an important message, but the song itself is beautiful.

Anyway, I’ll get of your case now.  Let me know what you think below.

Enjoy!

They’ve Got Your Number!

Hello and welcome!

First of all, let me start by welcoming you to this new blog, I won’t go into reasons for starting it, mainly because there aren’t any, I’ll just get right to the point with this first post.

You may have heard stories in the press recently about a new mobile phone number directory which is now available.  “What’s wrong with that?” you may ask.  Nothing as long as you choose to be listed.  This is the catch, you were not given the choice and if you have a registered UK mobile phone you ARE listed.  This means you have to actively request to be made ex directory.

118800, the company responsible for the directory claim that instead of giving the number out to anyone who requests it, they offer to put them through to the holder of that number for a fee of £1.  More details of this can be found on the BBC News Website.  The BBC story can be watched below:

My main concern is how the company obtained the numbers:  Through cold callers and Internet marketers and the like.  These numbers were purchased from companies who you gave your number to and then (most likely) clicked a check box stating that they may use the number without you necessarily knowing they would pass it on.  In fairness the 118800 do say they won’t sell your number on, but then again they purchased the information from companies you didn’t expect to either.

Well, to remove yourself from this directory you can do either one of two things:

  • Text the letter “E” to 118800 from the number you wish to have removed, they will then text you to confirm this.
  • Go to the 118800 website and click the ex-directory button, fill in a form and you will be sent an SMS with a confirmation code.  Simply enter the code to be removed.

I don’t know how quickly this is done, it may be instantanious.

A lot of people will be happy to be listed in this directory and that’s fine, I personally just think it should however be a matter of choice in the first place.

Anyway, that’s enough from me for now.  I would however be interested in hearing your thaughts on this by leaving a comment below.
